Match Day Recap

I last left you with a bunch of pictures with no explanation of Match Day.  I realize that the majority of readers are school friends of mine, but I want to let others know the general gist of the day.
Here is a timeline of 4th year.
1.  September 1:  applications for residency go in
2.  Nov-Jan:  interviews
3.  Feb 28th:  rank lists are due
4.  March 17th:  Match Day

Match Day is the day that medical students find out where they're going for residency.  At the same time across the United States (noon for Eastern time), every medical student in the United States opens up their letter revealing where they will be going for residency.
For us at Marshall, the day started at 9:30AM, where we had a class meeting.  We also had to buy our graduation cap and gown.  As you can imagine everyone was very anxious all morning.
Our families showed up around 11:30 to join us for the celebration.  At 11:45, our names were called at random to come to the front of the room.  At this point, you could either decide to open up your envelope in front of everyone or go back to your seat. Most of us chose to stay up front.
At the stroke of noon, the room was silent except for the ripping of envelopes followed by screams of excitement and joy!  I opened up my letter and as soon as I saw Delaware, I jumped up in the air.  I immediately turned around to Courtney and said, "Where are you going?"  Courtney screamed, "I'm going to Delaware too!"  We both immediately started hugging and sobbing.  We were emotional wrecks.  I don't have a sobby- cry baby picture of us.  Here's the list of where my friends are going...
Emergency Medicine                                            Pediatrics
Me- Delaware                                                     Courtney- Delaware
Megan & Forrest- Wake Forest                           Michelle- Cincinnati
Tristan- U of Maryland                                         Jennifer- Marshall

Jess- Dermatology at Medical College of Georgia
Adam- Radiology at Wake Forest

Jen's going to Baylor of OB/GYN!!

The Family.......

My dad is happy, but he's making some sort of strange face.

Proud mother....

After everyone was done crying, the real party began.  We all went to the Union for an afternoon/evening/night of drinking and debauchery.  Amazing time!!
I can easily say that this was one of the best days of my life.  However, with this excitement comes a feeling of sadness.  The people I have spent all my time the past 4 years of medical school are all moving away.  It makes me thankful for our time together, but hopeful that we'll stay in touch.

P.S.  I'm going to Delaware this weekend to look for houses!!

Shamrocks and Pizza

On Saturday, I ran in the Lexington, KY Shamrock Shuffle 3K.  Courtney, Megan and I ran in the race with one of my favorite ER and cardiologist attending's kids.  I actually did pretty well.  I'm convinced that spinning has improved my speed exponentially and I ended up running an 8:30 mile. We had a blast!  Oh, by the way.....I matched in emergency medicine!!!
I got the email today and I will find out on Thursday where I actually go for residency. All of my friends matched also, and I'm happy to say that our class has done great with this year's match.  That being said, I will be one drunk lady come Thursday.  Haha.

Andy, me, and our friends also tried out a new-to-me restaurant in Charleston called Pies and Pints.  It's a pizza place that started in Fayetteville, WV and has a new location in Charleston.   It's this amazing pizza place with gourmet pizza combinations and great beer selections.  Ain't no Miller Lite up in this joint.

You can't tell from here, but we had a couple of pitchers of the New River Gorge lager.  It 'twas delicious.  They even had Pinkus in a bottle, one of my favorite organic ales.

"Agree to disagree."
They have family style large salads, so we split 2 of them.  This is a mixture of Greek salad and the house salad.  The vinaigrette was killer!

The awesome thing about this place was that you can order 1/2 and 1/2 pizzas.  We got 2 larges and split them up.  These are the 4 pizza we ordered...
1) Grape Pie: sliced red grapes with gorgonzola and fresh rosemary
2) Steak and MushroomPie: grilled steak, caramelized onions, roasted mushrooms, and gorgonzola with creme fraiche and scallions
3)  Thai Pie: shrimp, toasted coconut, Thai curry sauce with fresh cilantro and basil
4)  Mushroom Garlic Pie:  roasted mushrooms, feta, caramelized onions, roasted garlic and herbs

The Thai Pie was the outstanding favorite of the night!!  Amazing flavors....the curry sauce really changed it up from your usual pizza sauces...

You may be skeptical about the grape and gorgonzola, but it's one of the most popular choices in the restaurant.  This baby is sweet and savory all rolled into one.  Delish!!!

Stay tuned...........

The ABCs

It's 7 days until Match Day!!  I've been busy doing 2 kinds of work; 1) working in the ER, and 2) working on my fitness.  I'm pretty proud of myself even though I drank too many beer calories last night.  Haha.  I've seen these ABC things on a bunch of other blogs and really like them, so I though I'd give them a shot.

A. Age: 25
B. Bed size: King all the way.  Andy and I really like our own space....we're not big cuddlers when it comes to sleepy time.
C. Chore you dislike: Taking out the trash.  Hate doing it!
D. Dogs: Bunsen, my beautiful Silky Terrier, a rescue puppy.
E. Essential start to your day: Coffee.  I need coffee both for its caffeine but also because I think there's nothing better than a warm cup of coffee with cream to start the day.
F. Favorite color:  I like pink the most, but love wearing most colors.
G. Gold or silver:  Silver
H. Height:  5'2...vertically challenged.
I. Instruments you play(ed):  I started playing the piano when I was 8 and took lessons up until I was 16.  I also played flute, piccolo and sousaphone in the band.  A wide and weird variety.
J. Job title: Medical student transitioning into emergency medicine resident in July!
K. Kids:   Just Bunsen, and that's the way I like it.
L. Live: In Huntington, WV but I'll be finding out my new location next Thursday!
M. Mom’s name:  Sue Ann
N. Nicknames:  Nicknames aren't really my thing but I'm occasionally called by a nickname, usually by Andy.
O. Overnight hospital stays:  All the time when I'm on call, but never as a patient.
P. Pet peeves:  Hypocrites, misspellings, baby names that are spelled strangely or are just plain weird, and laziness.
Q. Quote from a movie:  "Oh Evan!  Thank you for bringing this bottle of spermicidal lube for my p***y!"-----SuperBad
R. Righty or lefty:  Right handed.
S. Siblings:  Megan
T. Time you wake up:  Completely variable depending on my work schedule....oh the life of a med student.
U. Underwear: "That thong, th-thong thong thong."
V. Vegetables you dont’ like: I honestly can't thing of a vegetable that I don't like.  There are some that I like more than others, but I don't really hate any veggies.
W. What makes you run late:  Sorry my dear, but Andy makes me late. I'm a stickler for being punctual but he is usually running behind.
X. X-rays you’ve had:  Chest X-ray, knee and foot.  (I've also had a few head CTs.)
Y. Yummy food you make:  I cook a lot, so I like to think that I make multiple tasty dishes. I can't pick a favorite, but one thing I made last nice was a black bean hummus for friends, and it was a hit.
Z. Zoo animal favorites:  Monkeys??  I haven't been in a zoo in years, and don't really care to go back.

Last night was a lot of fun.  In honor of our upcoming Match Day, we decided to paint beer steins at The Pottery Place. Surprisingly, multiple people including guys and girls showed up to paint.  Andy being the amazing person that he is, made a kick ass beer stein with his family crest.  It basically put all of the other beer steins to shame.  Mine has Match Day on one side, 2011 on the handle, and an orangey red Irish moustache on the other side.
